Cataract Surgery

Dr. Druger wants his patients to be informed about Cataracts and the latest in treatment options. Most people will develop cataracts as they get older. In fact more than 50 percent of all Americans over the age of 60 have developed cataracts. Although cataracts cannot be prevented or reversed, Dr. Druger uses state-of-the-art technology, including premium intraocular lenses (IOL’s) such as AcrySof IQ ReStor and AcrySof IQ Toric at our Camillus location.

Types of cataracts include:
A cataract is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. It prevents the light from passing clearly through the lens, causing vision loss. Since new lens cells form on the outside of the lens, all the older cells are compacted in one spot of the lens which creates the cataract.

Symptoms of Cataracts:

  • Vision that is cloudy, blurry, foggy, or filmy
  • Progressive nearsightedness in older people often called “second sight”because they may no longer need reading glasses.
  • Changes in the way you see color because the discolored lens acts as a filter.
  • Problems driving at night such as glare from oncoming headlights.
  • Problems with glare during the day.
  • Double vision (like a superimposed image).
  • Sudden changes in glasses prescription.

What Is Cataract Surgery?
During cataracts surgery, the cataract-affected lens in replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). IOLs are usually made out of a flexible material which allows the surgeon to fold and insert the IOL through a small incision. Once the cataract is removed and the IOL is in the proper place, light can once again travel to the back of the eye without any hindrance.

Restor IOL Surgery (Multifocal)
During standard cataract surgeries, patients are given monofocal IOLs which improves the distance vision in the patient but the patient will have blurred near vision. Afterwards the patients continue living life wearing their glasses for all near tasks.  With ReStor Multifocal IOLs, patients are able to see at any distance, near, far or anywhere in between.  In fact, clinical studies have proven that 4 out of 5 patients never wear their glasses or contacts again after the surgery.

Toric IOL Surgery
The AcrySof IQ Toric IOL is changing the way people with astigmatism see cataract surgery – and life. This foldable, single-piece lens is implanted during cataract surgery to replace the clouded lens. It provides clear distance vision for patients with astigmatism, usually without the need for glasses. Simply put, Toric IOLs allow you to leave your glasses and contacts behind and recapture quality distance vision in one step.
